Tips for Healthy Social Media Usage

Bryant B., BS Exercise Science, Corporate Health Unlimited

Social media has become a major part of everyday life, however if used recklessly it can quickly take a toll on your mental health and overall wellbeing. Here are some tips on how you can reap the benefits of social media without letting it harm their mental health.

  1. Take a Break or Reduce Time
Taking a break or stepping back from social media can benefit your mental health. Log out from your accounts for a full day, week or even a month. Start tracking the time you spend on social media using tools that track or manage the time you spend on your social media accounts. Use your time away from social media to connect with family and friends or to pick up a healthy hobby.
  2. Unfollow Unhealthy Accounts
Your social media account’s feed should not decrease your happiness, self-esteem or life satisfaction. Remove or block friends, influencers, businesses or organizations accounts from your feed that are sharing negative content that makes you feel anxious, sad or insecure. Follow accounts that share inspiring and motivational content that make you feel confident and positive about your life.
  3. Consider What You Share
The energy that you promote and the conversations that contribute to on social media will play a role in determining what kind of engagement you attract. Examine the role that you play on social media and create content that aligns with the energy that you’re hoping to receive such as positivity, love and encouragement.
